A motley crowd took to the streets on Saturday evening, to celebrate World Day against Death Penalty. Dhikkara, dhikkara maranadandanege dhikkara (Down with death penalty), we want justice! Shouting these slogans and leading the protest were two youngsters carrying a long rod that held five swaying nooses. Behind them were students dressed in black tees that read -- "Save us" in four languages -- Hindi, English, Kannda and Tamil.

South India Cell Human Rights Education and Monitoring (SICHREM) will present a petition with a list of demands to various government authorities on June 26, the UN International Day in support of torture victims.
The demands include immediate ratification of the Convention against Torture without any reservations, and signing and ratification of the optional protocol to the convention against torture.

Disabled man ends life after being released

Mani, a 23-year-old disabled person, who had consumed poison on June 15 after allegedly being harassed by the Hebbagodi police, died on Thursday.
In connection with this case, the South India Cell for Human Rights Education and Monitoring (SCHIREM) has filed a case against the Hebbagodi police with the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission.
