UN INTERNATIONAL DAY IN SUPPORT OF VICTIMS OF TORTURE

Seeking responses for the prevention, reduction & elimination of torture for a humane and just society…


Friends and colleagues,


26 June is INTERNATIONALLY observed as the day in Support of Victims of Torture.

The day is marked so as to show our support, solidarity to all victims of torture and concern on the issue of torture. In India, wherein several people are kept in illegal detention, tortured, abused physically and verbally, beaten, intimidated, threatened, false cases imposed, money extorted, etc, taking away the human rights and the dignity of the individual especially the downtrodden, poor and the voiceless. In Karnataka itself, more than 600 cases are being investigated and documented as well as are being intervened in one or the other way at the courts or with the national /State human rights institutions by SICHREM through the National Project on Preventing Torture in India.

The day is being observed by, SICHREM jointly with the Centre for Social Concern (St Joseph’s College), Indian Social Institute, Amnesty International, Bangalore Chapter and other human rights, women’s groups, students and several other individuals in showing solidarity with all victims and in demanding the ratification of the convention against torture and for bringing in a domestic legislation on torture.
